Alesis Q88 Accordion Keyboard Controller is a full-scale MIDI keyboard controller with the music in mind. Not trying to impress with gadgets and gizmos, this keyboard focuses on providing a means to convey your musical ideas through your DAW.
The keys on this streamlined machine are semi-weighted, giving them a more realistic feel compared to classic synth-action keys and of course they are velocity-sensitive as well, conveying the expression behind your music.
While remaining basic and to-the-point, the Q88 does have two wheels for pitch bend and modulation control, as well as octave transpose buttons, a volume fader (re-assignable to preferred effects) and 1 assignable button. There is a sustain pedal input in the back, as well as a MIDI out port to connect with external MIDI devices. Although this unit is USB bus-powered, there is optional AC adapter powering available for those times when you wish to play connected to devices other than your computer.

This device is able to be used with Mac, Windows and even iOS through the Apple Camera Connector Kit (Although I would imagine it would drain your iPad battery fairly quickly!). Just plug this midi keyboard in, and you’re playing!
Staying sleek and slim, this keyboard measures 53.5” x 5.5” x 3.5” (width x depth x height) and weighs only 17.5lbs. Easy transportation, easy setup, and easy storage.

- Octave up/down buttons
- 1 Slider
- 1 Assignable button

Who would be best suited to work with the Q88?
This simple keyboard would be a great companion for those who are learning to play the piano while learning to control their DAW. 88 full-sized, semi-weighted keys are great when trying to get the feel of a keyboard and allow you to reach all of the notes on a real piano scale. The lack of distractions is a purposeful decision on Alesis’ part to keep it all about the music.
Beginners and knowledgeable composers alike will find value in this midi controller. While this would also make a great complimentary piece to add extra depth to a professional studio, as a main anchor unit, the Q88 would probably fall short due to it’s lack of control elements.
The main reason this controller made the cut to get on My Electronic Keyboards, is because it is a cost efficient way to allow users access to a full-sized keyboard without breaking the bank.
Pros and Cons:
- Small frame, lightweight unit
- Basic design keeps it all about the music
- Bundled Ableton software is a huge bonus!
- USB powered (plug and play, no drivers required!)
- Drains Laptop Battery
- Short USB cord
Battery Draining Factor – A review of this keyboard states that when using with their laptop, the user found the batter was drained at a noticeably quickened rate compared to normal. This could definitely be an issue if you are planning on doing a lot of composing without having your computer plugged in. Then again, this is a full 88-key controller, so I am not sure how many scenarios you will find yourself in (like brining it to the cafe?) where you will not have a power option for your computer, apart from live gigs perhaps.
Short USB Factor – The USB connection could be a little longer. Depending on where your USB port is on your computer, it could make connection a little awkward. A rectifiable option would be to purchase another cord (which would be a bit of an annoyance), but it can definitely be lived with.
*I will make a personal note here, that a couple of users gave this keyboard a 1 (out of 5) on Amazon due to them not receiving the product that they were expecting to receive. It appears that they received products that weren’t new, and weren’t what were advertised. From the same seller, other costumer’s were completely satisfied with their purchases.
So two things should be said:
- 1 – I will try to find the best rated dealer to link to from Electronic Keyboards Review
- 2 – Always do your due diligence before investing in a product. You are your first line of defence!
This unit delivers on what it promises to for the price. It is a straight-forward midi controller that allows you to both preform and record your music without the hassle of configuring dozens of additional control factors. As one satisfied customer states ‘you get what you pay for’.
