QuNexus Smart Sensor Keyboard Controller is awesome! The people at Keith McMillen Instruments worked long and hard to bring you this bad boy and it doesn’t disappoint. Until now, the options for ultra-compact MIDI keyboards have been pretty slim and pretty similar. A few miniature key controllers, a few pad-style keyboards, and you’d be lucky to have any features beyond octave toggle and maybe a sustain button.
Because I know a lot of people are ultra picky about their keys, I will begin by saying that the QuNexus has drum pad keys arranged like a piano keyboard. BAM! Half of you probably clicked ‘back’ after that sentence. If you didn’t, however, let’s continue and get into the gritty of this wicked new ultra-portable MIDI controller from Keith McMillen Instruments!

First lets take a look at how small this ultra-compact keyboard really is. Measuring just 12.8” x 3.3” x 0.4” (W x D x H) this keyboard is proof that size doesn’t matter! Just so we’re clear, that’s less than half an inch high! The QuNexus weighs in at only 12oz to boot. Tiny. Ok, I think you get the picture. Carrying this USB powered keyboard in your computer bag is not an issue, it will fit right beside your laptop or tablet.
As I mentioned, the keys are drum pad style keys laid out like a keyboard. While the keys are able to played like a regular keyboard, they can also be great for triggering effects, loops, samples, things like that.
The Smart Sensor keys have been specially designed for this device, and they don’t disappoint. Not only are they pressure, velocity and tilt sensitive, they are LED lit with 16 levels of brightness to indicate the amount of pressure being applied to them.
These keys accurately convey your intent and style to your DAW. On top of that, these Smart Sensor keys are equipped with polyphonic aftertouch! (Aftertouch is great feature which allows modulation to be expressed through a lingering finger playing the keys, as opposed to a separate modulation control requiring additional dexterity. Aftertouch is a rare feature for a keyboard this small.)
The QuNexus not only is USB connected, it also supports Pedal input, Control Voltage input and output AND external MIDI expansion (through jack converters). This is the first ultra-portable MIDI controller to combine MIDI, CV, OSC and USB controller in one device!
Keith McMillen Instruments QuNexus Key Features:
- Smart Sensor keys detect velocity, pressure and tilt
- Polyphonic Aftertouch
- Mac, PC, iOS, Android AND Linux compatible!
- Plug and Play connectivity – No drivers necessary
- USB powered
- Pitch bend
- External MIDI, CV, OSC and USB controls
Who is the QuNexus designed for?
While the QuNexus has all the qualifications of an ultra-portable MIDI keyboard that are coveted by those who produce music on the go, it also offers SO much more, making this unique keyboard hard to assign to a specific musician.
Really, this beauty by Keith McMillen Instruments is designed to set a new standard for compact MIDI controllers, being just as useful to the amateur composer as to the professional who cannot lug a 70lb full-scale keyboard with them! No matter your experience level, this keyboard would be a good fit for you (and your computer bag!).
The only reason I would think would be a deterrent for purchasing the QuNexus, if you were in the market for a portable MIDI keyboard, would be it’s price. If you are specifically looking for a simple controller that gets the notes down and can trigger effects through your DAW, there are other, more affordable options. Take a look at the Korg nanoKEY2 for instance, running $50 or less, this simple keyboard might be what you’re looking for.
Remember though, you are paying for features and QUALITY when it comes to the QuNexus. You aren’t getting a cheap toy, you are getting a keyboard intelligently designed to be a game changer in the ultra-compact MIDI market.
Pros and Cons:
- Ultra-compact, take this baby anywhere
- Packed with great features you wouldn’t expect to find on a device this small
- Quality made
- Works with literally ANY type of operating system! Mac, PC, iOS, Android and Linux. If you aren’t running any of those operating systems, you have bigger problems than a MIDI controller…
- Pitch bend can be tricky to manipulate
- Keys are textured to the point of feeling ‘sticky’
Pitch Bend Factor – Yes. Pitch bend can be a tricky S.O.B. to make work the way you want. She’s a little small, which is what happens when you try to include every feature possible on a keyboard this size. Anyway, it’s not the end of the world, however, this seems like one of those features you would almost rather leave out if it’s not going to work effectively.
Key Stickiness Factor – Yes. The keys tend to feel a little sticky due to their texture. Again, not a deal breaker, but something to be aware of so that you aren’t upset with your product.
The boys at KMI hit a home run with the QuNexus. Stylish design with incredible ingenuity. Totally sexy!
